Freshman quarterback TJ Finley will start for LSU on Saturday against visiting South Carolina as Myles Brennan continues to recover from injury.
LSU coach Ed Orgeron said Thursday that he intends for another freshman, Max Johnson, to take some snaps. He is the son of Brad Johnson, who quarterbacked the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl championship following the 2002 season.
“It could have been a flip of the coin,” Orgeron said of his decision between the freshmen.
Brennan, a redshirt junior who took over for Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, continues to recover from the lingering effects of a hit he took on a play near the end of the first half of the Tigers’ loss to Missouri on Oct. 10.
Brennan stayed in the game and was 29-of-48 passing for 430 yards and four touchdowns in the 45-41 loss for the defending national champions (1-2). The Tigers were off last weekend when their game against Florida was postponed because of outbreak of COVID-19 among the Gators.
He has 1,112 passing yards and 11 touchdowns on the season.
The 6-foot-6 Finley, from Ponchatoula, La., was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2020, according to the 247Sports composite.
Johnson played his high school football at Oconee County High in Watkinsville, Ga. The 6-5 Johnson was listed as a four-star recruit.
